Hong Kong is moving towards a carbon-neutral future. How can the construction industry lead this transformation through innovative technologies? To explore cutting-edge practices, Hong Kong Construction Industry Council (CIC) members, Sr Thomas HO Kwok-Kwan, Ir Prof. Andrew YOUNG, recently led a delegation of industry representatives on a study tour of the Greater Bay Area (GBA), focusing on innovative practices related to "Good Housing" and green, low-carbon construction, and gaining valuable experience in smart cities and sustainable building.
The tour featured several notable projects including the Shenzhen Qianhai WeBank Headquarters, which achieved dual LEED Platinum and BEAM Plus Platinum certifications and demonstrated the adaptability of Hong Kong's green building standards in mainland projects; the Guangzhou Nansha Mingzhu Bay Smart City Demonstration Area that utilized BIM, CIM and IoT technologies to achieve full 5G coverage, offering valuable smart city management insights; China's first zero-energy building, the Foshan Shenling Environmental High-Tech Zone Intelligent Manufacturing Base, showcasing lifecycle energy-saving potential; the Guangzhou Pearl River Group Smart Living Lab No. 1 featuring innovative interconnected scenarios like drone delivery and solar-storage-flexible communities; and the China Construction Fourth Engineering Bureau Co., Ltd Technology Innovation Building integrating multiple energy-saving measures including ultra-low energy consumption technologies and renewable energy applications.
This exchange highlighted the mature applications of prefabricated construction, digital platforms, and intelligent detection in the GBA, strengthening our resolve to advance Hong Kong’s construction industry towards smarter, low-carbon development. The CIC will continue adapting these practices and collaborating with industry partners to deliver more “Good Housing” and build a world-class green smart city in Hong Kong.
